From the points of his crown, to his rings and the filigree of his royal sword, everything suggests a spiky quality of thorns that tells you not to get too close to the Elven-king – or else! Even the pattern of his costume reflects the dense, twisting and tangled forms of Mirkwood.

He certainly relishes the opportunity to portray this character of power and regality, whether in Thranduil’s first appearance in the film’s prologue, clad in white leather amour and riding a huge white elk, or holding a sword that is a single piece of steel pierced with an Elvish motif, or passing judgement on the captured Dwarves while seated on his throne impressively dressed in a golden robe. Lee discussed the concept of his outfit with Costume Designer, Ann Maskrey, and they talked about the portraits of Louis XIV of France in which he is adorned with great ceremonial robes. ‘Thranduil’s is actually very simple,’ says Lee. ‘It’s not decorative, but it is gold and looks incredible. This Elven-king is the money; he really dresses to impress!’
